The Basics of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that can be used to reshape small, damaged, uneven or sagging breasts. Of course, attractive breasts are an appealing outcome of this particular procedure, but it is important to be aware of the potential risks as well before you decide to go through with it.

As with any surgery, patients may experience problems after the procedure with bleeding, infection and scarring. Increased or decreased feeling in your breasts may also be a side effect of breast augmentation. If the scar tissue contracts a lot and puts pressure on the implants, breast hardening can also occur.

This problem is known as capsular contracture. Since every person in different, it is impossible for a surgeon to predict exactly how well your body will heal so it is important to know as much about the risks involved as possible before you make a decision.

There are a lot of choices to be made about your augmentation if you decide you want to move forward. One of these decisions is where to make the incisions for placing the implants. A few of the most common incision points include: between the breast, under the breasts, the armpits and, occasionally, the navel. The navel is probably the best choice for minimal scarring, but it is only possible to use the navel as an entry point if you have chosen to use saline implants.

Another decision that will significantly affect the outcome of your surgery is what kind of implants to use. The two most common materials used for implants are silicone and saline. Saline implants are a slightly safer choice evidenced by the fact that the FDA approves them for women at a younger age.

Also, if saline implants rupture, they will drain quickly and harmlessly into the body because salt water is harmless. It can be much harder to determine rupture in silicone implants though. Implants also differ in texture, shape, size and diameter. When choosing the right implants for your body, consult the plastic surgeon because he will be able to make suggestions based on other features of your anatomy.

If you are considering using plastic surgery for breast augmentation, you should also be aware that the cost of the procedure differs greatly from state to state. It is very much like housing prices. For example, breast augmentation in Los Angeles, California is typically more expensive than it would be in another state like Utah.

In fact, the money you would save by shopping around is usually so significant that it more than covers traveling expenses. More important than where you go though, is who you see. So make sure you use a surgeon who is board-certified and has a lot of experience to offer.
