Selecting The Best Pressure Washer For You

By:

Which pressure washer is right for you? It's hard to decide - given the many different models and manufacturers out there. In this article we would like to outline some things that you should take into consideration when it comes time to choose.

Where should you start? Perhaps the best place is to begin by thinking about how often you will need to clean with your pressure washer. Will it be once a week or less? Then you can probably get by with one designed for residential or homeowner use. If you will need to do your cleaning several times a week, you need a unit that can handle the workload - and that may mean a commercial unit.

In addition to how often, you will also need to consider just WHAT you will be cleaning. In particular: Will you be cleaning really gummy, grimy, oil- and grease-caked build-up? If so, you will need - at a minimum - a pressure washer unit that heats the water to a high temperature. Cold water will not cut through grease and oil. The best units for this type of clean up are those that develop steam vapor.

If you need your pressure washer primarily to clean up your car or deck or sidewalk - then you will find that a unit that develops under 2000 PSI will work just fine.

But on the other hand, if you need to clean your house brickwork, aluminum siding, or even a large truck - you will need a pressure washer that can deliver at least 2000-3000 PSI. This is sufficient for these jobs.

As you consult various product descriptions, you will find that some of them operate at much higher pressure ranges, typically over 3000 PSI. These are primarily intended for commercial use - and normally you will not need these types.

Many residential users choose a commercial-grade unit anyway, however. They get a pressure washer that will last longer and have a better warranty. This is because they are made with better quality components - especially the water pump.

Finally, don't forget to ask your dealer how the water pump will be serviced - will you have to take it in, or will they come to visit you? Make sure that you buy all the accessories you need - not all of them may be shipped with your unit, and you will need to purchase them separately. And when you are using your pressure washer, please wear goggles and be careful of the hot water and steam. And NEVER point the spray stream at other people.
