Protecting Your Child from Internet Predators

By:

The internet has revolutionized our lifestyle. It provides fun and educational information and the World Wide Web helps us stay close with friends and family members wherever they live. But there are some serious dangers involved, especially for children that become victims of predators who use the network to lure them into their web of hurt and deceit.

A phenomenal number of children each year fall victim to internet predators. Many are just involved with these individuals over the internet and never actually meet the predator. Friends, family members, or even law enforcement puts a stop to the relationship before it gets out of hand. Unfortunately, many more children are not so lucky and meet these individuals face to face. Often, these individuals abduct, rape, torture, or even kill these poor children.

Many internet companies, including America Online, Yahoo!, and Netscape, offer parental control features that allow you to block and monitor your child’s access to the World Wide Web. You would not dare allow your child to explore all cable channels and watch inappropriate shows, so you should also monitor your child’s access to the internet to ensure he or she does not open any inappropriate sites.

Speak with your child and teach them internet safety techniques. Only allow your child to converse with individuals you know, and monitor them during the conversation. Encourage your child to come to you with any problems or if an unknown individual is contacting them over the internet.

These days there are strict rules and guidelines to follow for accessing the Internet in schools and libraries. If they are allowed to access web by any means then a constant observation over them is must. In case there is a case of careless and negligent management then you should contact the school authorities.

When your child visits a friend, make sure all parties—including the child’s parent guardian—know of your stance on internet access. Many parents only permit their child to access the internet at a friend’s house if adult supervision is present. If you do not feel comfortable allowing this, then make your wishes be known.

At home, you should place the family computer in a central location where others can see the screen. It's better to put the family computer in the kitchen or family room, instead of having a separate room for it. All these are precautions to avoid the eventuality of your child being left alone while exploring the internet. This way you can be present if any problem arises.

Never hesitate in teaching the evil effects of Internet to your child. Instead of scaring them intentionally make them free to narrate Internet related problems they are facing. Also teach them a set way of reporting the problems or screen names of people indulging in obscene and indecent communication.

Complete vigilance and supervision over the kid while accessing Internet not only makes you relax but also keeps you tension free. Internet can prove wonders to your kids but be sure to warn them about the perils of the Internet.
