IQ Geeks - Open Your Mind

By: Patrick Patrick

Recycling is not just about managing waste, its actually about saving money, energy and helping the environment of our planet improve. Recycling has been around for thousands of years, not everything humans make is thrown away after we have finished using it. From recycling used fabric for making clothes, to using burnt out wood as charcoal, recycling has been around for quite some time. Today recycling has become even more vital to our survival on the planet.

Plastics are one of the most important items that are recycled, since a majority of plastics are non-biodegradable, there are only two things you can do to reduce plastic on the planet, the first is to burn plastic and destroy it, only problem is that destroying plastic causes release of CO2, and other poisonous gases into the atmosphere, its not safe for the planet as well as for humans. So the only other option is to reuse waste plastic to make new plastic. This way we can make sure that every bit of spare plastic we have is reused, and there are lesser and lesser amounts of new plastic made.

If you take a look at any plastic item today, you will notice it has a symbol that looks like three arrows meeting each other, in a circular pattern, that's the symbol for recycling, and means that the plastic you are using has actually been recycle, but it does not mean that the plastic is 100% recycled, usually the arrow has a % mentioned below it, that indicates how much of the plastic is being recycled. In addition the recycling symbol, also has a number in the middle, this indicates how many time the current plastic has been recycled. So the higher the number, the more times the same plastic is reused.

In addition to plastics another major pollutant of the earth are heavy metals that are used in batteries, heavy metals like Mercury and Cadmium etc. You might have heard of battery recycling plants, these plants have been setup to reduce the production of new batteries by extracting some of the heavy metals that exist in disposed batteries. The problem is that batteries come in so many different sizes, that they first have to be sorted into similar size batteries, and then recovery of metals can take place, also handling of toxic metals like Mercury and Cadmium requires caution and expertise, hence battery recycling is a very specialized field of recycling.

Apart from plastics and batteries, other materials like tin cans, aluminium foil is also frequently recycled. The idea is to save the environment from dumping and excessive addition of heavy metals into the soil. In the case of the batteries, once a dumping site is exposed to heavy metals, not just the dumping site, but areas around it too get contaminated with heavy metals. Hence recycling is an essential way for us to protect our environment. The next time you use a product, make sure that you use environment friendly material and help save the earth from toxic pollutants.
