Financing a Breast Augmentation Surgery

By: Art Gib

There are some factors that fit into the equation of how much a breast augmentation will cost. Generally, it will depend on type of implant used, surgery expenses (anesthesia, hospital stay, etc.), your plastic surgeon's fees and where you live. Usually physician fees are based on location as well (surgical breast augmentation in California is probably going to be more than one in North Dakota).

Types of Implants and Costs Associated

When talking implant shape, there are basically two types. There are teardrop and round implants that are filled either with saline solution or silicone material. The average cost just for the implants themselves are between $800 to $1,400.

Silicone implants are believed to have a more realistic feel to them. Also, as a side note, the FDA found silicone not to be linked to what many women have claimed to be causing illnesses. Silicone is a popular choice now, but does come with a heavier price tag.

Also, the type of implant will dictate the surgical procedure. There are two main locations under the breast that an implant is placed. They are either placed directly under the mammary glands within the breast, or they are inserted under the women's pectoral muscle. The price for these varies as well. You would want to inquire with your surgeon as to the specific price differences. Take into account that they can incur ranging expenses due to the type of procedure done on the breast.

Beyond the Physicians Fees, Hospital and Drug Cost

When your doctor may give you a quote of how much the operation costs, take account that this is not including what the hospital charges. Remember to ask the doctor how long the hospital stay is.

Although doctors' fees vary, the average costs for breast augmentation range from about $5,000 to $12,000. It's a wide range, and will vary especially with geographic region. The region cost varies so much that some women have sought out surgery in other countries. Some of these should be looked at critically, as there are different health codes and standards.

However, some prospecting women have found cheaper rates from state to state. For instance, if you were to get breast augmentation in California, say Los Angeles or San Diego, you would be paying at a premium. Breast augmentation in San Diego, where the demand is probably quadruple what it is for the rest of the nation, drives the prices higher.
